The Area 8 Special Olympics Unified Flag Football team is headed to Seattle, WA for the 2018 USA Games! From July 1-6, 2018, more than 4,000 athletes and coaches from around the United States will participate in 14 different sports throughout the Seattle area.
The group of ten consists of current and former Holt and Mason High School students, who participate in what’s called Unified Sports. Project Unified joins people without intellectual disabilities with Special Olympians to play together and promote social inclusion through sports.
The Holt/Mason team, known as Area 8, took home first place in their tournament in Chelsea, MI, which qualified them for the USA Games, where they will represent Team Michigan.
Area 8’s team includes BJ Moore, Bryce Moore, Bryan Hull, Jacob Fluke, Jacob Dibean, Johnathan Dreysse, Joshua Swenson, Mitchell Johnson, Morgan Rockwell, and Thomas Arra. The team is coached and led by Carl Meirndorf, Sally Meade, and Val Suszko.
The team will get the chance to play at the University of Washington athletic facilities, and Husky Stadium home of the Washington Huskies football team.
The USA Games only happen every four years, and this year Seattle is hosting. In previous years the USA Games have been held in Ames, Iowa (2006); Lincoln, Nebraska (2010); and Lawrenceville, New Jersey (2014).
